How the math works — a worked example

Cost per mg

$200 vial ÷ 10 mg = $20 / mg

Cost per dose

$20/mg × 0.5 mg = $10 / dose

Monthly (weekly dose)

$10 × 1 × 52 ÷ 12 ≈ $43 / month

Yearly (weekly dose)

$10 × 1 × 52 ≈ $520 / year

Cost per mg is the vial price divided by the vial size in mg, which lets you compare vials of different sizes on the same basis. Cost per dose multiplies that price per mg by your dose. Weekly and yearly figures simply multiply cost per dose by how many doses you take each week (×52 for the year).

Monthly cost uses 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 4.33 weeks per month rather than a flat 4 weeks. A 4-week month would undercount, since 12 four-week months is only 48 weeks. Using the true average of 4.33 weeks keeps the monthly estimate consistent with the yearly total. These are best-case estimates that assume no wasted or partial doses — actual pricing varies by pharmacy, supplier, insurance, and region.

How do you calculate cost per dose?

Cost per dose is the price per mg multiplied by your dose in mg. Divide the vial price by the vial size to get the price per mg, then multiply by the dose. For example, a $200 vial of 10 mg costs $20/mg, so a 0.5 mg dose is about $10. This is a budgeting estimate only — confirm pricing and dosing with your prescriber and pharmacy.

How is the monthly cost estimated?

Monthly cost uses the average month length of 52 weeks ÷ 12 ≈ 4.33 weeks per month, so monthly cost = cost per dose × doses per week × 52 ÷ 12. Using 4.33 instead of 4 avoids underestimating annual spend. Actual billing cycles and pharmacy pricing vary.

What does cost per mg tell me?
